Yawning Portal

The most famous inn in the city, arguably in all Faerun, the Yawning Portal is located on Rainrun Street in the Castle Ward, in the shadow of Castle Waterdeep, and a stone’s throw from Dock Ward to the south. Its primary claim to fame is the 40-foot wide well in the common room — the best-known entrance into the uppermost Dungeon Level of Undermountain. The ride down is free, and often accompanied by a raucous toast throughout the taproom (“To those who went before … To those who never came back!”); the ride up costs 1 gold ($25) per person, or if they don’t have the money, the forfeiture of everything they’re carrying. The Adventurers’ Guild maintains a copy of The Post in the taproom, focusing on missions into the dungeons below.

Durnan, the proprietor and ex-adventurer (famous for his party’s deep explorations of the dungeons below, and the large haul of treasure that has established him as a fixture in the city), sells basic adventuring gear (“Basics” from Chapter 4 of DF1). The tavern is a well-known hang out for many seasoned adventurers, active and retired, who are ready to help Durnan handle any trouble that spills in from the dungeons or the streets outside.
