Forgotten Realms: Splendors & Shadow
The Crying God, God of Martyrdom and Perseverance
Ilmater is the most merciful and benevolent of the Holy Triad, the healer-redeemer-forgiver who gives succor to the downtrodden and accepts the wayward back into the flock (assuming, of course, that they’re truly repentant). Ilmater’s faith is the most esoteric and contemplative of the Triad; those dedicated to him are seen wandering the land in mendicant poverty, relieving suffering and preaching the word, as often as administering temples (or hospitals, charities, soup kitchens, etc). Among Ilmater’s most famous servants are the devout Pain-Bearers of the Broken Order – sacred warrior-monks who combine holy powers with the esoteric training of the martial artist.
Elements: Good, Life, Peace.
Holy Powers: Allies, Blessed, Detect, Healing, Oracle, Patron, and Resistant as standard Holy Might; Damage Resistance 1 or 2 (PM, -10%; Tough Skin, -40%) (3 or 5); Doesn’t Eat or Drink (PM, -10%) (9); Less Sleep 1-4 (PM, -10%) (2/level) or Doesn’t Sleep (PM, -10%) (18); and Regeneration (Slow, Regular, or Fast; PM, -10%) (9, 23, or 45). Auras and imbuements as Holy Might, plus Aura of Soothing*, Penetrating Strike, and Project Blow to the list of choices.
Clerics: Standard template. Staff is the most common weapon, and many (but not all) forswear the use of edge weapons; while not expected to fight unarmed, they may learn Boxing, Brawling, or Wrestling as melee or background skills.
Holy Warriors: Ilmater is served by many holy warriors (standard template; Higher Purpose: Healer – bonus to all rolls made to aid the injured, or even to reach them in combat), but also by warrior-monks (martial artists, DF1, p. 9) who combine their exotic Chi abilities with Holy powers. • See also the Monks of the Broken Order, mystic martial artists who practice an esoteric form of the Ilmateri faith.
Disadvantages: Required: Sense of Duty (The downtrodden and suffering) [-10]. • Charitable, Disciplines of Faith, and Selfless are common, as is some kind of poverty. Add Honesty [-10], Pacifism (Self-Defense Only) [-10], and Vow (No Edged Weapons or Always Fight Unarmed) [-10 or -15] to the list of options. May not take Fat, Gluttony, Miserliness, or Overweight.
Skills: Esoteric Medicine (Holy). Weapons: Staff; Unarmed.
Spells: As for Healing Priests (DF7, p.21).
