Hand and a Half

The bastard sword and longsword are popular weapons for their versatility – swung for powerful cutting attacks, thrust for far-reaching impaling damage, used easily in one hand with a shield, or doubled up for better damage and parries. This style teaches the warrior to shift fluidly between different forms and grips, allowing him to seamlessly adapt his attack to changing circumstances. Versions of the style also exist for the battle axe; simply substitute axes for swords throughout the style, and swap out Bind Weapon for Axe Grab (normally learned with Dwarven Line Training).

Style Skills: Broadsword; Two-Handed Sword. (Or, Axe/Mace; Two-Handed Axe/Mace.)

Style Power-Ups

Bind Weapon (5 points for Level 1; 10 points for Level 2)
You’re skilled at locking swords with your opponent. You must specify either Broadsword or Two-Handed Sword when buying this power-up (the Two as One perk allows it to cover both skills); when attempting to initiate a bind (see p. MA67), use your full sword skill at Level 1, or Skill+4 at Level 2. If using a weapon with a normal crosspiece, you can use this ability to bind only with other swords; if you have a weapon with a specially-designed crosspiece (plus $100 to cost), you can attempt to bind any weapon, as if you were using a Jitte/Sai.
Perks: (Level 1) Skill Adaptation (Bind Weapon uses Broadsword or Two-Handed Sword) (1). • (Level 2) Technique Mastery (Bind Weapon) (1).
Technique: (Level 1) Bind Weapon (H) Skill+0 (4). • (Level 2) Bind Weapon (H) Skill+4 (4).

Flawless Defense (5 points)
Prerequisites: Weapon Master (Broadsword or Two-Handed Sword).
You must specify either Broadsword or Two-Handed Sword skill when buying this power-up (the Two as One perk allows it to cover both skills). When using your sword with the chosen skill, you ignore the penalties to parry Dual-Weapon, flanking, and run-around attacks. See pp. MA83 & 89.
Technique: Dual-Weapon Defense (H) Two-Handed Sword Parry+0 (2); Timed Defense (H) Two-Handed Sword Parry+0 (3).

Power Attack (7 points)
Prerequisites: Weapon Master (Broadsword or Two-Handed Sword); Power Blow.
Roll against Power Blow and spend 1 FP (successful or not); if you succeed, instantly improve ST by half-again (x1.5) for your next attack or roll.
Perk: Unique Technique (Power Attack) (1).
Technique: Power Attack (H) Power Blow+0 (6).

Reverse Grip (6 points)
You must specify either Broadsword or Two-Handed Sword when buying this power-up (the Two as One perk allows it to cover both skills); by rolling your unmodified sword skill, you can switch between a normal and reversed grip with your sword as a free action. See pp. MA78 and 111-112.
Techniques: Reverse Grip (A) Skill+0 (6).

Whirlwind Attack (6 points)
Prerequisites: Weapon Master (Broadsword or Two-Handed Sword).
You must specify either Broadsword or Two-Handed Sword when buying this power-up (the Two as One perk allows it to cover both skills); you can make a special All-Out Attack in order to strike every adjacent foe with your sword, at full skill; see Whirlwind Attack (p. B232).
Techniques: Whirlwind Attack* (H) Skill+0 (6).

Style Perks (1/perk)

Grip Mastery (Hand-and-a-Half Sword) – See p. MA51, or PU2, p. 5.

Pommel Fist (Hand-and-a-Half Sword) – Use your sword skill (Broadsword if wielding with one hand, Two-Handed Sword if both) when pummeling with a bastard sword or longsword. See p. MA111.

Sheer Muscle – You use ST rather than Will for the Power Blow skill. Requires Weapon Master (Broadsword or Two-Handed Sword).

Two as One (Broadsword and Two-Handed Sword) – This perk merges the style’s skills into a single body. Instead of improving two separate skills for a hand-and-a-half sword, you always use the higher of your Broadsword or Two-Handed Sword skills when wielding a bastard sword or longsword, regardless of grip or how many hands you have on the weapon. Any technique, perk, or other ability (including Enhanced Parry, Weapon Master, Imbuement skills, etc) that you have which applies to either skill, but could also be bought for the other, need only be purchased once to apply to both skills. This applies only to hand-and-a-half swords; you still use a normal broadsword with the Broadsword skill, and a greatsword with the Two-Handed Sword skill. Requires the Grip Mastery style perk; you must also have at least one point in both Broadsword and Two-Handed Sword skills.
